Juliana Almeida held a hand against her mouth, stifling a yawn. Working nights at check-in was never a thrilling experience, and she was still a couple of hours shy of the end of her shift. Still, at least she was spared the frantic chaos of the morning rush, where passengers would be queued up beyond the lanes, waiting to collect their boarding passes. For obvious reasons, international flights between Brazil and Portugal were popular throughout the year.

She glanced up from her computer screen as a passenger approached her desk, dressed in cargo pants, trainers and a loose fitting T-shirt, his hair looking as if it had never seen a brush. He was carrying a small backpack over his shoulders, but otherwise seemed to have brought no luggage.

Almeida thought there was something a little odd about the way he walked, a certain jerkiness in his movements. His back was hunched, his shoulders slumped forward. She wondered for a moment if this might spell trouble, but she’d encountered enough drunk and belligerent passengers in her time to know this man wasn’t intoxicated. Perhaps he was ill or impaired in some way.

‘Good morning,’ she said, putting on the best smile one could summon at 3 a.m. ‘May I see your passport and booking confirmation?’

‘I have a flight reservation.’ There was an odd tone to his voice, which seemed to shift up and down at random. She also noticed that he avoided making eye contact.

She nodded. ‘May I see your passport?’

He handed it over, still evading her gaze. Scanning it through the reader below her desk, Almeida waited while the booking system retrieved his details.

Lewis Bailey, booked on the next flight to Lisbon, departing in about an hour. He was cutting it pretty close for an international flight, she thought. The gate might already be closing. He’d have to run if he hoped to make it…

Her train of thought halted when she noticed something in the notes section of his reservation.
